Everything Down There

Everything Down There Is On Shift

A hermit crab is house-flipping along the shoreline, renovating one shell and trading up to the next. A giant squid is on surveillance in water so dark almost nothing else goes there. Somewhere between them, a jellyfish is drifting past on a job most people never think to ask about. All of it is happening right now, and most children only ever meet it as "fish".

This book gives each of them a title. Fifty sea creatures, each introduced by the work it actually does, organised across seven ocean departments from the Shallow Shift at the shoreline to the Deep Sea Midnight Office at the bottom.

The watercolour carries as much of the page as the words do β€” and there are three objects hidden on every spread, so nobody gets through it in one pass.

One Book, Three Ways to Dive In.

Ages 6–7: Look & Find

Ages 6–7: Look & Find

Colorful illustrations and hidden objects turn every spread into a little underwater adventure. Kids can explore the pictures, spot surprises and discover something new without needing to read every word.

Ages 8–9: Read & Discover

Ages 8–9: Read & Discover

Funny job titles, real ocean facts, riddles and hidden details keep independent readers moving from one creature to the next β€” learning without it ever feeling like homework.

Ages 10+ : Connect the Science

Ages 10+ : Connect the Science

Older readers can look beyond the jokes and discover how each creature fits into the bigger ocean ecosystem β€” from survival and camouflage to communication, clean-up and life in the deep sea.

Made for Everyday Moments That Spark Curiosity

Made for Everyday Moments

At bedtime

Each creature has its own story, facts and discoveries, making it easy to read just one or two spreads before bed β€” or keep going when curiosity takes over.

Read & Find Together

Hidden objects, riddles and funny details turn reading into something parents and kids can enjoy together. Look closely, compare what you find and see who spots the surprises first.

After the Aquarium or Beach

Seeing a crab, jellyfish or hermit crab becomes much more interesting when kids understand what that creature actually does.

As a Gift

A colorful, screen-free gift for birthdays, holidays or simply because. Great for kids who already love ocean life β€” and just as good for sparking that interest for the first time.

Why This One Gets Opened Again

A delightful and imaginative way to introduce children to the wonders of the ocean! The Secret Jobs of Ocean Creatures is beautifully illustrated, cleverly written, and full of fascinating facts presented in a way that captures the imagination of both kids and adults. I love how each sea creature is given a creative "job" that makes learning about marine life fun, memorable, and engaging. The artwork is vibrant, packed with charming details, and invites readers to linger on every page. The writing strikes the perfect balance between humor, storytelling, and real science, making it educational without ever feeling like a textbook. This is the kind of book children will want to read again and again while adults will enjoy discovering new facts right alongside them. An outstanding book that deserves a place in every home, classroom, and library. As an ocean-loving adult, I enjoyed it and highly recommend this book!

Grandsons love these "secret jobs" books, I suspect it's the illustrations. Lots to look at.

As a mom of a daughter who dreams of becoming a marine biologist one day, I can't say enough wonderful things about this book. The moment she opened it, she was completely captivated. She spent so much time studying every page, pointing out creatures she recognized and laughing at all the clever job titles and jokes. The illustrations are absolutely breathtaking. The watercolor artwork is so detailed and beautiful that we found ourselves lingering on each page just to admire everything. There are so many little hidden details that we've already read it multiple times and still keep finding new things. I also love that it's educational without feeling like a lesson. My daughter has learned so many fun facts about ocean animals, and the creative "jobs" make it easy for her to remember what each creature actually does in nature. It's the perfect mix of humor, learning, and adventure. If you have a child who loves the ocean, sea life, or dreams of working with marine animals someday, this book is an absolute treasure. It has quickly become one of our favorite books, and I know we'll be reading it again and again. Highly recommend!

The Secret job of Ocean Creatures was a fantastic book. It had beautiful illustrations and the content was very easy for my little 5 year old great grandson to understand. He wants to be a Marine Biologist when he grows up and this book helped him to understand the job of each sea creature. I take my 5 year old great grandson to the Little Discovery Aquarium in Poulsbo every Friday to learn about the sea creatures. They have a touch pool there and he now knows what each creatures job is not only in the pool but also in the wild. He loves to share what he has learned from your book with any and all that listen to him talk about what all of the amazing creatures do. He also loved the challenge of finding the objects that were hidden in various places on each page. I highly recommend this book to any child that loves the ocean as much as my little guy. I would like to find out where to get it in either paper back or hard back so he could add it to his collection. Great job!!

These books are incredible. The illustrations are beautiful and so fun to look at. The ideas for each creature's roles are so clever it makes me chuckle. I plan to give these as gifts for most of the kids in my life, they are that universal. I wouldn't even say there is an age range they are fun for 7-100. The only reason I'm not giving a 5th star is the choice in print type. I feel like these books should be printed in glossy pages with a hardcover. They are beautiful but the pages are so delicate, it’s the only reason I would be careful giving them to younger kids. I also think the glossy pages would bring out the illustration and colors and make them more durable. If they ever do get reprinted, I'll buy a whole new set.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our products, shipping, returns, and more.

What payment methods do you accept? +

We accept all major payment methods to make checkout as easy as possible. These include:

  • Credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard)
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay

All transactions are processed securely. If you have any trouble at checkout, feel free to contact us and we'll be happy to help.

How long does shipping take? +

Free worldwide shipping. Your order arrives within 10–20 business days β€” about 2 to 4 weeks. That window covers preparing your order, dispatch and transit; there is nothing to add on top. Tracking is emailed the moment your order is dispatched.

What is your return policy? (30-day money-back) +

30 days. If the set isn't right, email support@kestrow.com within 30 days of delivery and we'll make it right β€” refund or replacement. Refunds are issued to your original payment method within 10 business days of approval.

What ages is this for? +

It's written for ages 6-10. At the younger end the watercolour spreads and the hidden objects carry it, so a child who isn't reading fluently still gets a full turn through the book. At the older end the profiles get read alone and the seven departments start joining up. It is one of the few ocean books with something still left in it four years after it's opened.

What's actually in it? +

Fifty ocean creatures, each with a short profile built around the job it does, a specimen card carrying its common and scientific name, field notes and callout bubbles. They're organised across seven departments from the shoreline to the abyss. 122 full-colour pages, a two-page spread per creature, with three hidden objects on every spread.

Is it too advanced for a six-year-old? +

No. Each creature gets a short profile with the illustration doing most of the work, so a six-year-old can go through it independently. The scientific names and the deeper field notes are there for when they're older rather than in the way now.

Will it get read, or will it sit on a shelf? +

The hidden objects are what bring a child back to it β€” three per spread, plus creatures who turn up in other chapters. A fact is read once; a page you have to search rewards a second and a third look. It's also short by design: two creatures before bed is a complete sitting, so it doesn't need a free afternoon to be worth opening.

Is it a good gift? +

Yes, and a rare one that survives the first week. It suits a child who already comes back from the beach with pockets full, and works just as well on one who hasn't started yet. The jokes are pitched so the adult reading along gets something too.
